HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 14, 2005)- A diving header goal from junior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) on a corner kick from junior defender Will Robbins (Ridgeland, MS/ Jackson Prep) was all the scoring the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney needed to shut out the Guilford College Quakers during a soccer game that kicked off Hampden-Sydney's homecoming weekend.
The celebration after the goal was short lived as a Guilford foul and collision with freshman defender Stafford Craymer (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) ended with an emergency call to EMS. Craymer was stabilized and taken away on a backboard. The injury inspired the Tigers team as they held Guilford to zero shots on goal while out shooting them offensively by a margin of 17 – 8.
With thoughts on their injured teammate, Hampden-Sydney dominated the remainder of the game but the score still stood at 1-0 until the eighty-sixth minute of play. Senior Bobby Hillmann (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) received header pass from junior captain Greg Smith and then proceeded to display the moves and skill that have made him a three time All-ODAC selection. Starting at midfield, Hillmann sidestepped the first defender, dodged the second and completely schooled Guilford defender Robbie Fisher causing him to spin around and watch Hillmann score an easy goal past a diving Quaker goalkeeper. The goal was Hillmann's fifth on the year and put Hampden-Sydney College up 2-0.
The win for the Tigers improved their overall record to 9-5-1 and 4-3 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney returns for action at home on Wednesday October 19, 2005 at 4:00 pm against North Carolina Wesleyan.
