TIGERS ROLL OVER EMORY & HENRY

(October 1, 2005) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The soccer Tigers dominated the visiting Wasps of Emory & Henry by a score of 3-1. The win improves Coach Josh Laux's squad to 6-4-1 overall and moves them to 3-2 in the ODAC. Emory & Henry, after a strong start early in the season, falls to 5-7 and 0-4 in the ODAC.

Hampden-Sydney displayed their best offensive output this year by scoring three goals in a game. The first score set the tone for the game and came thanks to the Raleigh, NC / Leesville Rd. combination of senior Grant Dickens and Bobby Hillmann. Dickens played the ball in the middle of the offensive zone and made a crisp, short pass to Hillmann, who blistered a shot into the upper left corner at the 12:48 minute mark in the first half.

Junior defenseman Kerry Burke (Chester, VA/ Thomas Dale) found the net by way of a header for his first goal of the year at 56:09 in the second half. The assist came off of a high arching corner kick from senior Robert Harem (Pelham, AL/Pelham). Also scoring in the contest was senior captain Rob Johnson (Monmouth, NJ/Matchfit Academy), who simply made two nasty moves to elude defender and right footed a shot past a diving Wasps' goalkeeper.

Freshman goalkeeper Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) seemed to have his sixth shutout all locked up but a late charge by the Wasps' Rob Andrews made the score 3-1. In total, Hampden-Sydney out shot Emory & Henry 20 to 8.

The Tigers will play a non-conference game the next time they take the field. Southern Virginia will visit Miller field on Wednesday October 5, 2005 at 4:00 pm.
