ASHLAND, VA – Hampden-Sydney's soccer team grabbed its first win of the season over Marymount University in a 1-0 shutout which earned them second place in the Randolph Macon Classic Tournament. After letting two heartbreaking games get away, one in the final 41 seconds and the second in OT, the Tigers are back on track bringing their record to 1-2.
After a very physical first half, H-SC had put 10 shots on goal compared to Marymount's three, but was unable to capitalize and came to the break even at 0-0. The Tigers continued their attack and finally struck as freshman Jaime Johnson (Marion, IA/Linn Mar) sent a perfect pass to Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) who scored what would be the game winning goal at 67:11.
With just seconds remaining in the game, Marymount had a one-on-one breakaway that had OT written all over it. Sophomore goalkeeper Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/ Boyd Buchanan) made a spectacular save to seal the victory for Hampden-Sydney and lift the Tigers record to 1-2 overall.
Hampden-Sydney had four corner kicks compared to Marmount's five, but out shot the Saints 15-10.
The Tigers have two days off before they hit the road again to face Averett on September 8 at 4pm. Keep your afternoon clear on September 18 for the Tiger's return to Miller Field where they face Eastern Mennonite at 1 pm.
