HAMPDEN-SYDNEY SOCCER TIES W&L IN DOUBLE OT BATTLE, 2-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney gave the fans as much soccer as they could handle on one of the biggest sports weekends of the year: Family Weekend. The Tigers battled Washington & Lee University through two overtime periods for a total of 110 minutes of soccer ending in a 2-2 tie. Hampden-Sydney's record comes to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference. W&L freshman Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar), former high school teammate of Hampden-Sydney standout freshman Jaimie Johnson (Marion, IA/Linn-Mar), struck the net first putting W&L up 1-0 at 23:32. The score remained 1-0 heading into half-time.

Hampden-Sydney freshman Brian Peters (Sterling, VA/Broad Run) scored his third goal of the season on a header at 60:45 to tie the score 1-1. Peters is now the leading scorer for the Tigers with three goals and one assist for a total of seven points.

With the score tied at one and time ticking away W&L's Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar) scored again with just 1:32 to play. The Tigers have seen this situation before. On multiple occasions Hampden-Sydney has outplayed their opponents the entire game and given up an unfortunate late game goal resulting in a loss, but not this time.

On a free kick with 21 seconds to play, senior captain Michael Kraemer (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) fired a shot over a W&L wall of players and into the right corner of the goal to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the crowd erupted as Hampden-Sydney scored what everyone thought was the game-winning goal. A questionable foul was called on the play and the referee took away the Tiger's goal. The game carried into a second overtime but the score remained tied 2-2 at the final horn.

Hampden-Sydney put nine shots on goal as they out shot Washington & Lee 18-16. The Tigers also had seven corner kicks compared to W&L's 5. An Old Dominion Athletic Conference game is explanation enough for the physical play resulting in 19 fouls for H-SC and 17 for W&L as well as two yellow cards apiece.

The Tigers travel to rival Randolph-Macon on Tuesday, September 28 for a 4 pm game.
