CARY, NC (September 11, 2004) – The Hampden-Sydney College Tigers lost in the second round of the Esprit D3 Classic Tournament to Emory University 2-0. Emory is currently ranked sixth in the nation and number one in the region. The loss drops the Tigers' record to 1-4 on the season.
Emory came out firing as they scored both their goals in the first 21 minutes of the game. Tiger keeper Nathaniel Dallas along with H-SC's defense made some great saves as numerous shots had been fired, but the ball finally found its way into the net from Jacques Edeline at 16:04 for Emory's first goal. Emory's final goal game just five minutes later when Karl Dix sent a cross to Chad Chambers who headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
In the next 69 minutes of play Hampden-Sydney locked up the sixth ranked team in the nation and showed signs of a great team. Head Coach Josh Laux said, "That's the best effort we've had from our team this far, especially in the second half. We're still a team that needs to learn to finish because that was the difference on the scoreboard."
Emory out shot the Tigers 25-5 and had nine corner kicks compared to H-SC's 3.
Hampden-Sydney will make up their game with Averett that was postponed last week on Monday at 4 pm. The Tigers return home September 18 at 1 pm to host Eastern Mennonite in its first ODAC game.
