CARY, NC – Hampden-Sydney dropped its first round game in the Esprit D3 Classic Tournament to The College of the South 3-1. The loss drops the Tiger's record to 1-3 on the season.
Sewanee jumped out to an early lead as Barry Slagle headed the ball into the net on a cross from Alex Marsden at 11:55. Just nine minutes later, Alex Marsden scored on a one-on-one move to the goal putting Sewanee up 2-0.
At 24:48 starting forward Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) left the game after he bashed heads with George Oliver of Sewanee on a loose ball in the air. Oliver was taken to the hospital to get stitches while Smith was diagnosed with a concussion and would not return.
Hampden-Sydney appeared to be regaining control of the game as they worked the entire mid-field flawlessly on a drive ending with Freshmen Jaime Johnson (Marion, IA/Linn Mar) scoring his second goal of the season at 38:50 and giving the Tiger's their second wind. With opportunities coming left and right the Tigers could not seem to capitalize again and the score would remain 2-1 at halftime.
With just six and half minutes to play Tiger goalkeeper Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville)made a spectacular save, but Sewanee's Andy Mantini got his head on the loose ball which then deflected off a Hampden-Sydney player's face and trickled into the net for the final goal. The score would remain 3-1 as the Tiger's record slips to 1-3.
Hampden-Sydney had one more corner kick than Sewanee, 7-6, but The College of the South out shot the Tigers 14-10.
H-SC takes on nationally ranked Emory University in the second game of the tournament Saturday at 3 pm. The Tigers then travel to Averett on Monday to make up their game that was postponed due to the hurricane; starting time is scheduled for 4 pm.
