HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (September 1, 2004) – Hampden-Sydney's soccer team put forth an impressive late run only to watch the game slip away with just under a minute to play in Wednesday's season opening 3-2 loss to Chowan College. The non-conference loss starts the Tigers season at 0-1.
At the end of the first half the two teams were locked up 0-0. Chowan came out firing in the second half scoring two quick goals, both by Jimmy Misner, in a span of less than 3 minutes at around the 55 minute mark.
The Tigers started to feel the heat and turned it up a notch with time winding down. H-SC freshman Jaime Johnson (Marion, IA/Linn Mar) scorched the net at 76:53 for the Tigers first goal of the contest. Rainer Haggerty (Hopewell, VA/Prince George) and Chis Colgate (Clarksville, VA/Bluestone) were both credited with an assist. Minutes later Hampden-Sydney's Will Beasley (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfold Academy) added a glimpse of hope as he hooked a left footed shot into the lower left corner of the net. After the Tigers worked so hard to come back and tie the game, Chowan freshman Leon Waddell headed the ball into the net to put the Braves back in the lead, 3-2, with 44 seconds remaining.
With less than a minute to go the Tigers scrambled for a goal and had a chance on a corner kick but could not capitalize. All three of Chowan's goals were scored on head balls.
Hampden-Sydeny heads to Ashland, VA this weekend to face Catholic and Marymount in the Randolph-Macon Classic Tournament. The action starts on Saturday September, 4 vs. Catholic at 1:00 pm and continues on the 5th at 2:30 pm vs. Marymount.
