HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 6, 2004) – A disappointed and frustrated Hampden-Sydney soccer team walked off Miller Field knowing it let Virginia Wesleyan escape with a 2-1 overtime victory Wednesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference soccer action. The loss drops the Tigers to 2-9-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the ODAC while Virginia Wesleyan moves to 7-4-1 for the season and 3-1-1 in the conference.
Hampden-Sydney took the lead 28 minutes into the game when freshman mid-fielder Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) drove a perfect ball towards the goal from nearly midfield as Brian Peters (Sterling, VA/Broad Run) sprinted past the defense and headed the ball into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Peters continues to lead the offensive attack for the Tigers with four goals and one assist for a total of nine points.
Virginia Wesleyan struck back just three minutes and 25 seconds later off a corner kick. The ball was headed by VW's Chris Mills (Virginia Beach, BA/Salem) and then redirected into the goal by forward James Monastra (Lake Ridge, VA/Woodbridge) tying the game 1-1. Mills and Kelvin Murray (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) were both credited with the assist.
The Tigers controlled possession for much of the second half and fired shot after shot but were unable to catch a break leaving the score tied at the end of regulation.
At 92:40 Ryan Cassell (Herndon, VA/Oakton) scored the winning goal for Virginia Wesleyan for a final score of 2-1.
Virginia Wesleyan out shot H-SC 19-16 while both teams had five corner kicks apiece. The Tigers were called for a total of 20 fouls compared to just 10 for Virginia Wesleyan.
Hampden-Sydney hosts St. Mary's College Saturday, October 9 on homecoming weekend at 3 pm.
