HAMPDEN-SYDNEY SOCCER FALLS TO ROANOKE 2-0

ROANOKE, VA – Hampden-Sydney soccer dropped their fourth ODAC game to Roanoke College 2-0. The Tigers fall to 2-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference while Roanoke moves to 5-5-1 on the season and 2-2 in the ODAC. With a total of 42 fouls and five cards, both teams were fired up and very physical in an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. At 14:16 Roanoke senior Dave DeMello (Shreveport, LA/Caddo Magnet) scored on a free kick which came from a questionable Hampden-Sydney foul. Eric Eversole (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) and Elliott Stallings (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) were credited with the assist. The score remained 1-0 at the break.

Early in the second half Hampden-Sydney mid-fielder Rob Harem (Pelham, AL/Pelham) received an unfortunate red card and an early exit from the game. The Tigers were forced to play the rest of the game with only 10 men on the field.

Despite being down a man, the Tigers continued to put pressure on Roanoke and even outplay them at times with the creative play of senior captain Bobby Hillman (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road), freshman standout Brian Peters (Sterling, VA/Broad Run), and sophomore mid-fielder Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier). As the Tigers were on the attack, Smith was pulled down inside the box with no foul called; taking away a huge scoring opportunity.

With just 5:07 remaining Roanoke mid-fielder Andrew Hall (Crofton, MD/South River) found the net, putting the Maroons up 2-0 and the game out of reach for Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers had the advantage on corner kicks 6-3 but were out shot 13-6.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Wednesday, October 6th vs. Virginia Wesleyan at 4 pm.
