LEXINGTON, VA (September 27, 2003)—Washington and Lee University scored a 3-1 victory over Hampden-Sydney in Old Dominion Athletic Conference soccer action Saturday. With the win, the Generals improve to 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the ODAC as the Tigers drop to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
For the second straight game, Hampden-Sydney struck first with a goal from freshman forward Marcus Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes), who connected on his sixth goal of the season off an assist from Michael Kraemer (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) in the 23rd minute of action.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, W&L's Brian Pirkle tied the contest with an unassisted blast in the 58th minute. Keith Sullivan then scored the game-winner in the 86th minute, followed by Pirkle's second goal of the game in the 88th minute to give the Generals a 3-1 victory.
The Tigers out-shot W&L, 12-10, while the Generals held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on October 1 as the team hosts defending ODAC-champ Roanoke at Miller Field at 4 pm.
