SOCCER TIGERS BLANK AVERETT, 3-0, FOR FOURTH VICTORY

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (September 11, 2003)—Three different players scored goals for Hampden-Sydney as the Tigers defeated in-state foe Averett University, 3-0, Thursday at Miller Field. With the victory, Hampden-Sydney improves to 4-1 while the Cougars fall to 0-2.

Senior striker Pat Whitehead (Williamsburg, VA/Walsingham Academy) put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the seventh minute with his fifth goal of the season on a chip shot over the goalkeeper off a Michael Kraemer (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) assist.

Leading 1-0 midway through the second half, freshman Marcus Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) connected on an unassisted blast, his second of the year, to put the Tigers ahead by two scores. Freshman Rainer Haggerty (Hopewell, VA/Prince George) then nailed the lid shut on the game as he scored on a penalty kick with four seconds remaining in the contest.

Overall, Hampden-Sydney dominated the offensive side of the ball, out-shooting Averett 29-4, while also holding a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeepers Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville) and Pierce Buckingham (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) combined for the Tigers second shutout of the season.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action Saturday, September 13, as the team travels to Ferrum, VA, to take on Ferrum College at 2 pm.
