TIGERS, YELLOW JACKETS PICK UP WINS IN TIGER SOCCER CLASSIC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (August 30, 2003)—Old Dominion Athletic Conference foes Hampden-Sydney College and Randolph-Macon College each picked up victories in the first two contests of the 2003 Hampden-Sydney Tiger Soccer Classic.  The Tigers (1-0) came-from-behind to upend Marymount, 2-1, while R-MC did the same against Savannah College of Art and Design, 3-2.

Hampden-Sydney freshman forward Marcus Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) made his first collegiate goal an important one as the rookie deposited the game-winner into the net in the 76th minute after shaking a defender and flashing past the goalkeeper, with the assist coming from Pat Whitehead (Williamsburg, VA/Walsingham Academy).  Jackson's goal came on the heels of a 55th-minute strike by Whitehead, who blasted one in from 30-yards past a diving keeper to knot the game.

Marymount took an early 1-0 lead on Jeff Hoke's first goal of the season as he netted a goal from five yards out off a Justin Kessler assist in the 15th minute.  From there in, the Saints took just four more shots to total six for the game, while the Tigers came away with 28 on the afternoon.

In the Classic's second contest, Randolph-Macon scored a 3-2 victory over Savannah College of Art and Design.  Scott Maskell scored the game's first goal in the third minute, but SCAD's Justin Wolocko put two quick blasts in the back of the net over the next six minutes to give the Bees a one-goal lead, 2-1.

Greg Ridout tied the contest for R-MC with a goal in the 47th minute thanks to an assist by Andrew Depcrynski.  Depcrynski then scored the game-winner in the 64th minute to seal it for the Yellow Jackets.

Action continues on Sunday as Randolph-Macon and Marymount meet at 12 pm at H-SC's Miller Field.  Hampden-Sydney takes the pitch against SCAD at 2 pm.
