HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 18, 2003)—Four freshmen scored goals as Hampden-Sydney's soccer team blanked Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Emory and Henry in convincing fashion, 6-0, Saturday before a crowd of 618 fans for a Homecoming victory. With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-7-1 overall and 1-5 in the ODAC as the Wasps fall to 1-11-2 and 0-6.
Freshman forward Rainer Haggerty (Hopewell, VA/Prince George) led the way for the Tigers with two goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Ryan Ulsh (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) scored his first collegiate goal, while assisting on another.
Freshman forward Marcus Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) collected his eighth goal of the year in the 32nd minute on a penalty kick to get the Tigers rolling. Just under seven minutes later, Haggerty scored his first of the game and third of the season to give H-SC a two-goal advantage at the break.
In the second half, Ulsh netted his goal off a Pat Whitehead (Williamsburg, VA/Walsingham) assist win the 62nd minute as the Tigers broke the game wide-open. Freshman midfielder Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Faquier) then scored his second of the season with assists coming from Haggerty and Ulsh in the 80th minute.
Just 49 seconds later, Hampden-Sydney move out to a 5-0 lead as Emory and Henry scored an own goal as a defender deflected Pat Whitehead's shot into the net. Finally, in the 84th minute, Haggerty put the game away with his fourth goal of the season to make the final score, 6-0.
Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville), Pierce Buckingham (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) and Murray Webb (Fayetteville, GA/The Webb School) each recorded time in the net as the Tigers posted their second shutout in their last three games.
Overall, Hampden-Sydney limited the Wasps to just one shot for the game, while the Tigers blasted 23. Hampden-Sydney also had nine corner kicks, compared to zero for E&H.
Hampden-Sydney will look to even its record as the team travels to Ashland, VA, for an ODAC matchup with Randolph-Macon College Tuesday, October 21, at 4 pm.
