HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 1, 2003)—Two goals in the final ten minutes of the contest were not enough as Hampden-Sydney's soccer team fell to defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference-champion Roanoke College, 3-2, Wednesday at Miller Field. The Maroons improve to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC as the Tigers drop to 5-4 and 0-3.
Elliott Stallings scored the first goal for the Maroons in the 13th minute on a penalty kick that was the result of a Tiger handball in the goal. Due to the handball penalty, Hampden-Sydney played a man-down for the final 76-plus minutes of the contest.
Paul Schwartz connected on the next two Maroon goals, both assisted by Stallings, as Roanoke built a 3-0 advantage in the 54th minute of regulation. With both teams starters on the bench, the Tiger subs began a rally as freshman forward Robbie O'Cain (Asheville, NC/Asheville) scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Brian Goeckerman (Raleigh, NC/Wake Forest-Rolesville) in the 83rd minute.
In the 84th minute, freshman Patrick Albrecht (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) connected on his first collegiate goal, scoring on a through ball from O'Cain to cut the Roanoke advantage to one goal. However, time expired before Hampden-Sydney could knot the score.
Roanoke out-shot the Tigers, 9-8, and held a 3-1 advantage on corners. Chris Lovatt recorded three saves in the net for the Maroons, while Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville) and Pierce Buckingham (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) combined to make two saves for the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, October 4, as the Tigers host Guilford College at 3 pm as part of Family Weekend events.
