Hampden-Sydney Runs Past Visiting Virginia Wesleyan 21-10

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) scored three goals and added two assists, while freshman Brown Parker (Raleigh, NC) scored three to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 21-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

It took just over a minute for the Tigers to get the scoring started with sophomore Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) finding the back of the net. H-SC then rattled off three goals in a minute and nine seconds, starting with Parker off a feed from senior Davis Mack (Henrico), then followed by sophomore Barron Dobson (Shreveport, LA) finishing the Palmer pass, and closed out by freshman Will Foley (Virginia Beach) putting home the pass from freshman Brenden Kittner (Freeland, MD). Conley got his first of the evening three minutes later off a pass from Dobson, before senior Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) caused a turnover and took it the length of the field to score his first of the season. Conley added his second of the evening off the pass from junior John Foley (Virginia Beach) with 1:12 remaining. The Tigers then closed with two goals in the final 20 seconds, first coming from junior Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC), and the second when Palmer converted Conley's pass with six seconds remaining to make it 9-0 after 15 minutes.

The Marlins took just a minute into the second quarter to stop the nine-goal run by the Tigers, but the Tigers responded just under a minute and a half later when junior Trey Black (Pinehurst, NC) finished off the Conley feed. Conley secured his hat trick just under 30 seconds later, and then Parker scored his second of the contest off the Mack feed to make it three goals in a minute and a half. Virginia Wesleyan answered back with a goal on the man advantage, but H-SC came right back on its own man advantage with fifth-year Harry Deller (Baltimore, MD) cashing in the Palmer pass. The Marlins clawed back with two straight goals to close the quarter, but H-SC went into halftime up 13-4.

It took just over halfway through the third quarter, but sophomore Nick Winchell (Wilmington, DE) pushed the lead to 10. Parker scored the final goal of the third quarter on the man advantage to get his hat trick, finishing off the Palmer feed to make it 15-4 going into the final 15 minutes.

Junior Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) started the fourth quarter for the Tigers when he finished the pass from freshman Scott Thompson (Charlotte, NC) a minute and 15 seconds in. The Marlins answered back with a goal before H-SC scored twice in less than two minutes, the first coming from Dobson off a Winchell pass, and the second coming on a pinpoint pass from sophomore Kaidan Garst (Salem) to junior Will Thompson (Charlotte, NC). Virginia Wesleyan then came back with four straight goals before junior Weston Totty (Salem) stopped the run when he put home the Black pass for his first career goal. The Marlins answered back with a goal, and then senior Quinn Seif (Atlantic Beach, NC) scored his first career goal off Totty's feed. The Tigers had one more in them as sophomore Cooper Goss (Suffolk) scored with 30 seconds left to secure a 21-10 win for the Tigers.

Junior Jack Duffy (Ambler, PA) led the Tigers defensively with three caused turnovers. Steele, Black, and Palmer all caused two turnovers on the evening.

Senior goalie Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) got the win in net for H-SC, making nine saves over 51:15 minutes. Junior Matthew Dryer (Severna Park, MD) made three saves over 7:36 minutes, while freshman Hastings Fava (Severna Park, MD) made one save over the final 1:09.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 11, when they travel to North Carolina to take on Guilford (NC) College. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Armfield Athletic Center.
