Matthew Arnold (Danville) added three hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 14-6 non-conference baseball win at home past Greensboro (NC) College on Wednesday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore right-hander
Reed Little (Spotsylvania) gained the pitching win in relief for the host Tigers against the visiting Pride. H-SC improved to 13-16 overall, while GC dropped to 16-13 overall.
H-SC scored 14 runs on 16 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the first inning, one run each in the second and third, five runs in the fourth and two runs each in the sixth and seventh. GC scored six runs on seven hits with three errors … scoring four runs in the first inning and two runs in the fifth.
In the first, sophomore third baseman
Connor Powell (Midlothian) (1-5) reached on a bunt single with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman on the play, advancing to third on a ball four wild pitch to junior first baseman
Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) (1-3, RBI), and the bases were loaded when senior center fielder and team captain
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (2-3, RBI) was hit by a pitch. Arnold (3-5, 2 RBIs) drew another walk to score Powell, and Shelhorse crossed the plate on an RBI single to right field by senior left fielder and team captain
Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (2-5, RBI). Wilson scored when freshman catcher
Gib Wirt (Efland, NC) (2 RBIs) reached on a fielding error at first base for an early 4-3 deficit.
In the second, Shelhorse reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second when Wilson was once-again hit by a pitch and crossed the plate on a run-scoring single to center field by Arnold to tie it at 4-4.
In the third, sophomore second baseman
Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (2-3, 2 RBIs) doubled to right field with two outs and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Sanford (4-6, 4 RBIs) for a 5-4 advantage that the Tigers would not relinquish.
In the fourth, Shelhorse drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, scoring on an RBI double down the left field line by Wilson, who advanced to third on a single to center field by Arnold. The bases were again loaded after a walk to Farr, and Wilson crossed the plate via a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Wirt. Farr stole second base and the bases were loaded once-again after freshman shortstop
Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (1-3, RBI) was hit by a pitch, and Arnold scored when Smith was hit by a pitch. Farr and Lester each crossed the plate when Sanford added a two-run double to left center field for a 10-4 lead.
In the sixth, Lester single to right field as the lead-off hitter and advanced to second on walk to Smith, scoring an RBI double to right center field by Sanford. Smith later scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Shelhorse for a 12-6 advantage.
In the seventh, Arnold singled up the middle and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Farr. Following a walk to Wirt, Lester provided a sacrifice fly RBI to right field that plated Arnold and Farr scored when Smith added a run-scoring single to center field to provide for the final 14-6 margin of victory.
Freshman left-hander
Garnett Power (Midlothian) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 1.0 inning, allowing no hits and four runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Little (2-1) followed with 4.0 innings of middle relief for the win, scattering three hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior right-hander and team captain
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) tossed the next 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and no walks. Freshman right-hander
Hayden Bynum (Richmond) tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC remains at home to welcome Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Roanoke College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 11, beginning at 1p.m. on Youth Day at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
