Connor Powell (Midlothian) tied a career-high with three hits and had a career-high five RBIs in the second game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep at home past Roanoke College on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) started and gained the mound win in the 15-4, seven-inning run-rule nightcap that also featured a career-high tying three RBIs by sophomore left fielder
Sam Vick (Capron). The host Tigers improved to 15-16 overall, including 8-7 in the ODAC, while the visiting Maroons dropped to 17-14 overall, 5-10 in the ODAC.
In game one, H-SC scored seven runs on six hits with one error … scoring one run in the first inning, four runs in the fourth, and two runs in the sixth. RC had six hits with no errors.
In the first, Sanford (3-4, 2 RBIs) led-off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fly ball out off the bat of Powell. Sanford scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by junior designated hitter

Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (RBI) each drew four-pitch walks, and were each advanced on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher
Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) (1-3). Wilson and Howell scored on a clutch two-out, two-run single to left center field by Lester (1-4, 2 RBIs), who advanced to second on a wild pitch ahead of a walk to sophomore second baseman
Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-2). Sanford plated both runners with a two-run triple to right field for a 5-0 lead.
In the sixth, Sanford reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base ahead of Powell getting hit by a pitch, and the bases were loaded after a walk to Shelhorse. Wilson was also hit by a pitch to score Sanford, and Powell crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Howell to provide for the final 7-0 margin of victory.
Austin (2-2) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and took care of the rest, pitching the complete game shutout with 9.0 scoreless innings, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. He retired the visitors in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, and registered 12 fly outs and nine ground outs on the day.
In game two, H-SC scored 15 runs on 13 hits with three errors … scoring seven runs in the second inning, three runs in the third and five runs in the sixth. RC scored four runs on eight hits with two errors … scoring one run in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth.
In the second, Vick (1-3, 3 RBIs) drew a lead-off walk and stole second base, scoring on an RBI double to left field by Lester (2-2, 2 RBIs), and Lester scored when Smith (1-3, RBI) followed with an RBI double down the right field line. Junior catcher
Noah Leonard (Troutville) (2-4, RBI) reached on a throwing error, and Smith crossed the plate on a one-out double down the left field line by Powell (3-5, 5 RBIs), and the bases were loaded after a two-out walk to Wilson. Howell (1-4, RBI) followed with another walk to plate Leonard, and Vick—batting for the second time during the at-bat—cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field for the early 7-0 lead.
In the third, Leonard led-off with a single and Sanford (2-4, RBI) followed with a double down the right field line, and both scored on a two-run single up the middle by Powell. Shelhorse (1-4, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored with two outs when Lester was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 10-0 advantage.
In the sixth, Lester tripled to right center field with one out, and after Smith was hit by a pitch, Lester scored on an RBI single up the middle by Leonard. Smith crossed the plate when Sanford added a run-scoring single to right field, and both Leonard and Sanford crossed the plate on a two-run triple down the left field line by Powell. Shelhorse plated Powell with an RBI single up the middle to provide for the final 15-4 margin of victory.
Wilson (6-3) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.2 innings for his team-leading sixth win of the season, allowing five hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore left-hander
Noah Lewis (Crewe) tossed the final 2.1 innings, yielding three hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC has won three-straight games and five of its last six, and will resume its suspended game (from April 1) against (RV)Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday evening, April 14, at 4 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. The Yellow Jackets have a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
