BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore catcher Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) had two hits and two RBIs, and senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) had one hit, one RBI and scored two runs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 17-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision at home to nationally-ranked No. 2 the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior right-hander Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) started on the mound and took the pitching setback for the host Tigers against the visiting Hornets in the seven-inning, run-rule contest. H-SC dropped to 12-16 overall, including 6-7 in the ODAC, while Lynchburg improved to 21-3-1 overall, 10-0-1 in the ODAC.

H-SC scored five runs on eight hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second. Lynchburg scored 17 runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the first inning, 12 runs in the decisive third and one run in the sixth.

In the first, junior designated hitter Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) reached base with two outs after being hit by a pitch. Following a walk to Wilson (1-2, RBI), Truesdale (2-2, 2 RBIs) provided a run-scoring single to left field to score Shelhorse, and the bases were loaded after junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (2-2, RBI) singled through the left side. Sophomore left fielder Sam Vick (Capron) (1-2, RBI) drew another walk to plate Wilson for a 4-2 deficit.

In the second, senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-3) singled up the middle with one out and advance to second when sophomore third baseman Connor Powell (Midlothian) was hit by a pitch. Sanford scored with two outs on an RBI single to left center field by Wilson, and Powell crossed the plate on another RBI single to left center field, this time by Truesdale … and Wilson crossed the plate again when Howell added a run-scoring single to center field and an early 5-4 advantage.

Unfortunately, Lynchburg answered with 12 runs in the top of the third inning for a 16-5 lead toward the final margin via the conference's 10-run rule.

Williams (0-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 2.0-plus innings for the loss, allowing five hits and 10 runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and six walks. Sophomore right-hander Reed Little (Spotsylvania) followed and recorded one out, yielding two hits and five runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Junior right-hander Alex Caruso (Appomattox) followed and recorded one out, as well, allowing one hit and one run, earned, also with no strikeouts and three walks. Senior right-hander Cooper York (Gastonia, NC) tossed the final 4.1 innings of relief, scattering five hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.

H-SC has a short turnaround before hosting non-conference opponent Greensboro (NC) College (tomorrow) on Wednesday evening, April 8, at 5 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
