Hampden-Sydney Wins At Home Past Visiting Virginia Wesleyan 11-8

BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) had a grand slam home run and four RBIs, and sophomore third baseman Connor Powell (Midlothian) had two hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 11-8 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball home win past Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore right-hander Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) started on the mound and earned the pitching win for the host Tigers, while sophomore left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) gained his first collegiate save in late relief against the visiting Marlins. H-SC improved to 16-20 overall, including 9-9 in the ODAC, while VWU dropped to 19-16 overall, including 9-9 in the ODAC.

H-SC scored 11 runs on 10 hits with four errors … scoring three runs in the second inning, seven runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth. VWU scored eight runs on 12 hits with two errors … scoring one run each in the fifth and seventh innings and six runs in the eighth.

In the second, sophomore catcher Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) (1-4) singled to left field to begin at-bat, advanced to second on a single to right field by senior left fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-4) and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (1-3, 2 RBIs). Truesdale scored on an RBI single to center field by senior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-4, RBI), and the bases were loaded after a walk to sophomore second baseman Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville). Farr was out at the plate on a fielder's choice, but Arnold and Smith crossed the plate on a two-run single to left field by Powell (2-4, 2 RBIs) for an early 3-0 advantage.

The Tigers almost scored in the third when junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-4) doubled off the wall to the opposite field in left field, just missing a home run.

In the seventh, H-SC loaded the bases with no outs after Powell doubled down the left field line, senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (2-4) reached on an infield single and Howell drew a walk. Powell was out at the plate on another fielder's choice, but Wilson scored with one out when Lester drew a walk, while Howell and sophomore pinch-runner Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) each crossed the plate when Arnold reached base on a wild pitch while striking out. Sophomore Sam Vick (Capron) pinch-ran for Arnold before junior second baseman Matthew Kim (McLean) was hit by a pitch to load the bases again … and Lester, Vick and Kim scored ahead of Samford who promptly slammed the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field for the grand slam home run—his third homer this season—for a 10-2 lead.

In the eighth, Lewis reached base with one out courtesy of a throwing error and scored with two outs on an RBI single up the middle by Lester to provide for the final 11-8 margin of victory.

Brady Wilson (7-3) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 6.0 innings for his team-leading seventh win on the season, scattering five hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior right-hander and team captain Sterling Austin (Petersburg) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and six runs, four earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Lewis (1) tossed the final 1.1 scoreless innings for the save, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC will play its final non-conference game on the road at nationally-ranked No. 13 Christopher Newport University on Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m. in Newport News.
