Carter Burcume (Midlothian) had career-highs of three hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 10-9 come-from-behind and non-conference baseball upset road win at nationally-ranked No. 13 Christopher Newport University on Thursday afternoon in Newport News. Jase Howell (Portsmouth) gained the pitching win in late relief, as the Garnet & Grey rallied with seven runs in the ninth inning. The visiting Tigers improved to 17-20 overall, while the host Captains dropped to 23-12 overall.
H-SC scored 10 runs on nine hits with four errors … scoring one run each in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings and seven runs in the decisive ninth. CNU scored nine runs on 16 hits with three errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, and two runs each in the third, sixth and ninth.
In the fourth, sophomore catcher
Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) (2-3) doubled down the right field line with one out and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by sophomore left fielder
Sam Vick (Capron) (1-4, RBI) for a 5-1 deficit.
In the fifth, Burcume (3-5, 2 RBIs) singled up the middle to open the frame, advanced to second on a single to left field by Sanford (2-5, RBI) and moved to third on a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore third baseman
Connor Powell (Midlothian). Burcume crossed the plate via a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by senior center fielder and team captain
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (RBI) for a 5-2 deficit.
In the eighth, Truesdale was hit by a pitch to begin the at-bat and advanced to second on a ground ball off the bat of senior designated hitter
Matthew Arnold (Danville) (RBI), scoring when Vick reached on a two-base throwing error for a 7-3 deficit.
In the ninth, Burcume led-off with a double down the left field line, advanced to second when Sanford was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Burcume scored with one out courtesy of another wild pitch with Sanford moving to third ahead of a walk to Wilson, and the Tigers had the bases loaded with one out after a walk to Truesdale. Sanford crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by Arnold, and the bases were loaded again after a two-out walk to Vick. Wilson scored on yet another walk, this time drawn by junior first baseman
Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) (1-4, RBI), and Truesdale crossed the plate on a walk to junior second baseman
Matthew Kim (McLean) (RBI). Following a pitching change, Burcume batted for the second time in the inning and provided a two-run single up the middle that plated Vick and sophomore pinch runner
Robert Chapman (Woodbridge), and Kim crossed the plate on an RBI single through the left side by Sanford for a 10-7 advantage toward the final margin of victory.
Senior right-hander
Cooper York (Gastonia, NC) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and five runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore right-hander
Reed Little (Spotsylvania) followed with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Freshman right-hander
Hayden Bynum (Richmond) recorded two outs, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior right-hander
Alex Caruso (Appomattox) retired the only batter he faced. Howell (1-0) made his first mound appearance of the season and tossed the final 3.0 innings for the win, allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.
