HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior
Kevin Myers (Charlottesville) scored three goals, while senior
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) scored twice and sophomore
Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) scored once and added two assists, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to nationally-ranked No. 3 the University of Lynchburg in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Saturday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead when Myers scored his first of the evening just over three minutes into the game. The Hornets responded, scoring twice in the final 6:02 to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
It was Myers again for the Tigers scoring to open a quarter, as just under three minutes in, he put home the feed from freshman
Brenden Kittner (Freeland, MD) to even the game. Just under two minutes later, H-SC retook the lead when sophomore
Riley Mullins (Glen Allen) found junior
Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) for the goal. Hanes made it three unanswered for the Tigers at the 6:40 mark when he put home the bounce pass from freshman
Brown Parker (Raleigh, NC) to push the lead to two. The Hornets responded 58 seconds later, but H-SC held firm the rest of the quarter to lead Lynchburg 4-3 going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Lynchburg started the quarter hot, scoring four straight in the first five minutes to retake the lead and push it to three. Just under two minutes later, senior
Davis Mack (Henrico) stopped the run of the Hornets when he put home the Palmer feed. Lynchburg responded less than a minute later, but then at the 3:52 mark, senior
Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) took it coast-to-coast for the goal to make it 8-6 in favor of Lynchburg with 15 minutes left to play.
The Tigers cut the lead to one almost immediately in the fourth, as Myers scored his hat trick less than a minute into the final 15 minutes. The sides traded goals over a minute and a half span, with Lynchburg scoring first before Hanes scored his second off the second assist from Palmer. The Hornets built up a cushion over the next eight minutes, scoring three unanswered to push their lead to four. Mullins gave the Tigers some life with 1:16 remaining when he put home the pass from Steele on the break to cut the lead to three. Lynchburg answered just over 30 seconds later, before Palmer scored on the man-advantage with 14 seconds left. Unfortunately, that was the final goal the Tigers mustered as they fell 13-10.
Myers led the Tigers offensively with three goals, while Hanes scored two and Palmer scored one with two assists. Steele and Mullins each scored once and assisted once, with Mack being the only other Tiger to score in the game. Kittner and Parker each had one assist for H-SC on the evening.
Defensively, H-SC was led by junior
