Hampden-Sydney Sweeps Doubleheader At Averett 4-3, 4-3

DANVILLE, Va. -- Senior center fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) had three hits and two RBIs in the first game, and sophomore designated hitter Connor Powell (Midlothian) added his first collegiate home run, while Powell had two hits and two RBIs and freshman shortstop Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) had two hits and an RBI in the second game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep on the road at Averett University on Saturday in Danville. Sophomore left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) gained the pitching win in relief in the 4-3 opener, while sophomore right-hander Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) took the mound win in the 4-3 nightcap with senior right-hander Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) earning a save. The visiting Tigers improved to 8-4 overall, including 2-0 in the ODAC, while the host Cougars dropped to 5-9 overall, 0-2 in the ODAC.

In game one, H-SC scored four runs on 11 hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the sixth and one run in the decisive eighth. AU scored three runs on seven hits with one error … scoring one run in the first inning and two runs the sixth.

In the first, sophomore left fielder Sam Vick (Capron) was hit by a pitch to begin the contest … stole second base and later scored with two outs on a clutch RBI single to right field by senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-4, RBI). Sanford advanced to second on a single to left field by junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-4), and crossed the plate when Farr (3-4, 2 RBIs) added another clutch hit with an RBI single through the right side for the early 2-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Powell (2-5, RBI) led off with a solo home run to left field, his first career home run, for a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth, Powell began the at-bat with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error, moving to third on a ground ball off the bat of Howell. He scored what proved to be the game-winning run with two outs when Farr added another clutch hit with his run-scoring single up the middle … that proved to be the game-winning hit and the 4-3 final margin of victory.

Senior right-hander and team captain Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 5.1 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Lewis (1-1) tossed the final 3.2 scoreless and hitless innings for the win with two strikeouts and two walks, as well.

In game two, H-SC scored four runs on 11 hits with one error … scoring one run each in the first and sixth innings, and two runs in the decisive seventh. AU scored three runs on eight hits with one error … scoring one run each in the first, fourth and eighth innings.

In the first, Sanford (1-4) opened the game with a single to right field and advanced to third with one out when Powell (2-5, 2 RBIs) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second. Following a walk to sophomore designated hitter Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) (1-4), Sanford scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Howell (RBI) for an early 1-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Farr (1-3) singled through the right side with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on an RBI single up the middle by Lester (2-4, RBI) to tie it at 2-2.

In the seventh, freshman Hunter Langston (Moyock, NC) (2-3) doubled down the left field line to begin the at-bat and was pinch-run for by sophomore third baseman Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork). Vick (1-4) reached on an infield single with one out, moving Lewis to third, and Vick was in scoring position after stealing second base. Powell promptly followed with a two-run double down the left field line that scored both Lewis and Vick with the what proved to be the game-winning hit and a 4-2 lead toward another 4-3 final margin of victory.

Wilson (3-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 7.1 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Williams (3) tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and no walks for his third save this season.

H-SC will play a non-conference doubleheader on the road at the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday, March 10, beginning at 1 p.m. in Fredericksburg. The two games are each scheduled for seven innings.
