UMW scored seven runs on 10 hits with four errors … scoring one run each in the first, third and sixth innings, and two runs each in the seventh and ninth.
In the second, senior center fielder and team captain
Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-3) singled to right field with one out, advanced to second on a single to center field by Howell (1-2) and scored when freshman shortstop
Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) reached on a throwing error … tying it at 1-1.
In the sixth, Sanford (2-3) led off with an infield single, advanced to third when freshman pinch-hitter
Ryan Dugan (Virginia Beach) reached on fielding error and scored on a wild pitch. Freshman pinch-runner
Gib Wirt (Efland, NC) scored on an RBI single to left field by Powell (1-5, RBI), and Powell stole both second and third base, scoring on a throwing error on his second steal for a 4-2 advantage.
In the seventh, sophomore third baseman
Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) drew a lead-off walk, stole second base and crossed the plate courtesy of a throwing error on a sacrifice by freshman second baseman
Hunter Langston (Moyock, NC) for a 5-3 lead.
In the ninth, Lewis once-again drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on another sacrifice by Langston, moving to third on a wild pitch. Following a walk to Sanford, Lewis scored on a ground ball off the bat of Chapman (RBI) for a 6-5 advantage.
Freshman right-hander
Hayden Bynum (Richmond) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.1 innings, scattering four hits and two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore right-hander
Colin Mabe (Alton) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Senior right-hander
Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) also pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Garnett (0-1) pitched the final 1.1 innings for the decision, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC will play on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Guilford College on Saturday, March 14, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina. A scheduled non-conference game against 19th-ranked Christopher Newport University on March 12 has been postponed and no rescheduled date has been determined.
