Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) tied a career-high with three hits, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 8-4 non-conference baseball road win at Regent University on Thursday night in Virginia Beach. Sophomore right-hander
Reed Little (Spotsylvania) started and pitched 6.0 innings with a career-high six strikeouts to earn the mound victory for the visiting Tigers against the host Royals. The Garnet & Grey improved to 6-4 on the season, while the first-year program at RU dropped to 1-7.
H-SC scored eight runs on 11 hits with one error … scoring one run each in the first, second and third innings, three runs in the seventh and two runs in the ninth. RU scored four runs on three hits with three errors … scoring three runs in the first inning and one run in the second.
In the first, sophomore first baseman
Connor Powell (Midlothian) (2-5) reached on a two-out single, stole second base and scored when Truesdale (3-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single for the early 1-0 advantage.
In the second, sophomore right fielder
Jack Wells (Sutherland) drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a balk and scored on a run-scoring single by sophomore catcher
Robert Chapman (Woodbridge) (2-4, RBI) for a 3-2 deficit.
In the third, Lewis (1-5, RBI) led off the inning with his first collegiate home run and the deficit was 4-3.
In the decisive seventh, Powell reached on an error to open the frame ahead of another single by Truesdale. Freshman
Sawyer Whitmore (Virginia Beach) pinch-ran for Powell and both he and Truesdale scored on a two-run double by Farr (1-4, 2 RBIs) for the go-ahead runs and a 5-4 lead. Freshman
Gib Wirt (Efland, NC) later reached base on a two-out error, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate courtesy of another wild pitch for a 6-4 advantage.
In the ninth, junior team captain
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) drew a walk as a pinch-hitter and was replaced by junior
Matthew Kim (McLean) as a pinch-runner. Kim scored when Farr reached on a throwing error that allowed him to advance to third base, and Farr scored when freshman second baseman
Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) provided a sacrifice fly RBI to left field to provide for the final four-run margin of victory.
Little (1-0) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 6.0 innings for the mound win, yielding three hits and four runs, all earned, with his career-high six strikeouts and two walks. Senior right-hander
