HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore
Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) and freshman
Will Foley (Virginia Beach) each scored a pair of goals, but Hampden-Sydney College fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action to Roanoke College, 9-7, on Homecoming Weekend at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
It took just over five minutes into the game for the first goal to find the back of the net, and it went the way of the Maroons, but just over two minutes later, the Tigers leveled the scores when Foley finished off the feed from sophomore
Riley Mullins (Glen Allen). Roanoke answered, scoring less than a minute later and added one more before the first quarter finished to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
The Tigers cut into the lead a minute and 17 seconds into the second quarter when senior
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) beat the goalie. It took over seven minutes before the next goal was scored, with the Maroons scoring twice over two minutes to take a three-goal advantage. The Tigers answered back with two goals in less than two minutes, starting with Palmer finishing off the feed from freshman
Brown Parker (Raleigh, NC), and then sophomore
Barron Dobson (Shreveport, LA) found the back of the net with 39 seconds remaining to make it 5-4 going into halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Roanoke, as they scored twice over the quarter to pull out to a 7-4 lead going into the final 15 minutes.
The Maroons kept the run going in the fourth quarter, scoring twice over the first two minutes, both on the man advantage, to make it 9-4. H-SC responded at the 7:23 mark, as Hanes found Foley for the goal to cut into the Roanoke lead. The Tigers made it two unanswered as Conley went behind the back for the finish, and then cut the lead to two at the 1:43 mark with Palmer scoring his second of the day. Despite two more shots late, the Tigers were unable to beat the goalie again and fell 9-7.
Palmer and Foley led the way offensively with two goals each, with Hanes scoring once and assisting once. Conley and Dobson each scored a goal, with Mullins and Brown adding an assist each. Foley co-led the Tigers defensively with two caused turnovers, along with junior
Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC).
Senior goalie
Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) made 17 saves on the afternoon in the loss.
The Tigers will be back in action for a neutral site game against St. Lawrence (NY) University on Wednesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at Georgetown Preparatory School.
