HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman Gib Wirt (Efland, NC) had a hit and an RBI in game one, and junior Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) hit a three-run home run in game two, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped both games of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at home to Washington and Lee University on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Senior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started and took the pitching decision in the 20-1, seven-inning run-rule opener, while sophomore left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) started and took the mound decision in the 7-6 nightcap. The host Tigers dropped to 10-10 overall, including 4-3 in the ODAC, while the visiting Generals improved to 11-6-1 overall, including 6-3-1 in the ODAC.

In the sixth, senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that allowed him to advance around to third base. Sanford scored no a one-out RBI single to center field by Wirt (1-1, RBI).

Austin (1-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and faced 10 batters while recording two outs for the decision, allowing four hits and eight runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and four walks. Senior right-hander Cooper York (Gastonia, NC) followed with 1.1 innings, yielding six hits and six runs, all earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman right-hander Brady Hubbell (Raleigh, NC) made his collegiate debut and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman right-hander Hayden Bynum (Richmond) tossed the final 2.0 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.

W&L scored seven runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the second inning, one run in the third, three runs in the sixth and one run in the ninth.

In the sixth, junior left fielder Ian Martin (Martinsville) (1-3) was hit by a pitch with two outs, advanced to second when sophomore designated hitter Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and the bases were loaded after a walk to junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-3). Martin and Truesdale each crossed the plate on a clutch two-out, two-run single to left field by senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-5, 2 RBIs) for a 6-2 deficit.

In the seventh, Wirt (1-4) singled through the left side with one out, stole second base and scored with two outs when Sanford (1-5, RBI) had a run-scoring single to left field for a 6-3 margin.
