Connor Powell (Midlothian) added a triple and a run scored, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 6-3 non-conference baseball decision at home to nationally-ranked No. 20 Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) started on the mound and took the pitching setback. The host Tigers dropped to 10-11 overall, while the visiting Captains improved to 15-5 overall.
H-SC scored three runs on four hits with one error … scoring one run in the first inning and two runs in the seventh. CNU scored six runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the decisive seventh.
In the first, Powell (1-4) tripled into the left field corner with two outs and scored on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 lead.

Jase Howell (Portsmouth) was hit by a pitch to begin the at-bat, advanced to second on a one-out single to center field by freshman shortstop
Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (1-4) and both runners moved up a base on another wild pitch … and the bases were loaded after sophomore designated hitter
Sam Vick (Capron) (1-3) drew a two-out walk. Sanford (1-5, 2 RBIs) followed with a two-run single to right field that plated both Howell and Lester to provide for the final margin.
Wilson (4-2) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings for the tough-luck loss, scattering six hits and two runs, both earned, with five strikeouts and one walk. Freshman left-hander

Reed Little (Spotsylvania) pitched the final 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m. in Virginia Beach. The Tigers will be back at home again next Saturday, March 28, for a conference doubleheader against visiting and nationally-ranked No. 7 Shenandoah University beginning at 12 p.m. … next weekend is also the program's
