Hayden Bynum (Richmond) started on the mound and took the pitching setback in the seven-inning, run-rule contest played at nearby Longwood University. The host Tigers dropped to 10-7 overall, while the visiting Tigers improved to 10-5 overall.
H-SC scored three runs on nine hits with one error … scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth. WU scored 14 runs on 17 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the third, one run in the fourth, seven runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh.
In the fourth, senior center fielder and team captain
Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-3) reached on a two-out infield single to the second baseman, scoring when Dugan (2-3, RBI) followed with an RBI triple to the wall in right center field on a 3-2 pitch. Dugan crossed the plate when Wirt (2-3, RBI) followed with a run-scoring single to left field for a 5-2 deficit.
In the fifth, senior right fielder and team captain
Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-3) reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop that resulted in two outs. Sophomore first baseman
Connor Powell (Midlothian) (1-2) plated Sanford with his RBI single to right center field and the margin was 12-3.
WU added the decisive two runs in the top of the seventh that provided for the 10-run rule after seven innings.
