FARMVILLE, Va. – Freshman designated hitter Ryan Dugan (Virginia Beach) and freshman left fielder Gib Wirt (Efland, NC) each had two hits and one RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 14-3 non-conference and neutral-site baseball decision to Wittenberg (OH) University on Sunday afternoon at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville. Freshman right-hander Hayden Bynum (Richmond) started on the mound and took the pitching setback in the seven-inning, run-rule contest played at nearby Longwood University. The host Tigers dropped to 10-7 overall, while the visiting Tigers improved to 10-5 overall.

H-SC scored three runs on nine hits with one error … scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth. WU scored 14 runs on 17 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the third, one run in the fourth, seven runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh.

In the fourth, senior center fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-3) reached on a two-out infield single to the second baseman, scoring when Dugan (2-3, RBI) followed with an RBI triple to the wall in right center field on a 3-2 pitch. Dugan crossed the plate when Wirt (2-3, RBI) followed with a run-scoring single to left field for a 5-2 deficit.

In the fifth, senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-3) reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop that resulted in two outs. Sophomore first baseman Connor Powell (Midlothian) (1-2) plated Sanford with his RBI single to right center field and the margin was 12-3.

WU added the decisive two runs in the top of the seventh that provided for the 10-run rule after seven innings.

Bynum (1-2) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 2.0 innings for the tough-luck loss, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore right-hander Reed Little (Spotsylvania) faced three batters, yielding one hit and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Freshman left-hander Garnett Power (Midlothian) followed with 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore right-hander Colin Mabe (Alton) recorded two outs, yielding four hits and six runs, all earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Senior right-hander Cooper York (Gastonia, NC) tossed 2.0-plus innings, allowing six hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) made his first appearance of the season and faced two batters while recording the final out, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC will play on the road at the University of Lynchburg in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest against the fifth-ranked Hornets on Wednesday, March 18, at 3 p.m. in Lynchburg.
