Hampden-Sydney Sweeps Doubleheader At Guilford (NC) 7-4, 6-2

Sophomore designated hitter Connor Powell (Midlothian) had three hits and scored four runs in the first game, and senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) had two hits and two RBIs in the second game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep on the road at Guilford College on Saturday in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sophomore left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) gained the pitching win in relief in the 7-4 opener, while sophomore right-hander Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) started and took the mound win in the 6-2 nightcap with senior right-hander Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) earning a save. The visiting Tigers improved to 10-6 overall, including 4-0 in the ODAC, while the host Quakers dropped to 7-9 overall, 0-4 in the ODAC.

In game one, H-SC scored seven runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring one run each in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings, two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth. GC scored four runs on eight hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning, two runs the fourth and one run in the ninth.

In the first, Powell (3-4) drew a two-out walk, stole second base and advanced to third when senior center fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-4, RBI) reached on a fielding error. Junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (2-5, RBI) singled up the middle to score Powell for the early 1-0 advantage.

In the second, junior catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) was hit by a pitch with two outs, advanced to second on a walk to sophomore left fielder Sam Vick (Capron) (1-2) and scored when Sanford (1-5) reached on another fielding error for a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Powell led-off with a double down the left field line and crossed the plate when Farr followed with an RBI double to left center field to tie it at 3-3.

In the seventh, Powell singled to left field to begin the frame and promptly stole second base, adding third base with one out that included a throwing error and allowed him to score the go-ahead run at 4-3.

In the eighth, sophomore third baseman Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second when freshman shortstop Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (1-3) was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base on a ground ball off the bat of Leonard, and both runners scored courtesy of a wild pitch for a 6-3 advantage.

In the ninth, Powell again led-off with a double, this time to left center field, advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt by Farr and crossed the plate on an RBI infield single by freshman second baseman Hunter Langston (Moyock, NC) (1-1, RBI) with two outs and a 7-3 lead toward the final margin of victory.

Senior right-hander and team captain Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.2 innings, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Lewis (2-1) tossed the final 4.1 innings for the win in relief, yielding three hits and one run, unearned, with a season-high eight strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, H-SC scored six runs on 10 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the third inning and one run each in the sixth, seventh and eighth. GC scored two runs on seven hits with four errors … scoring one run each in the second and ninth innings.

In the third, Lester (2-2, RBI) led-off with a walk and advanced to third on a single to right center field by junior second baseman Matthew Kim (McLean) (1-3), scoring on an RBI single to right field by Sanford (2-5, 2 RBIs). Powell (2-4, RBI) followed with another RBI single to right field, and Sanford crossed the plate on yet another RBI single to right field, this time by sophomore catcher Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) (2-5, RBI) with one out and a 3-1 advantage.

In sixth, Lewis reached on a two-out fielding error, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored when Lester followed with a run-scoring double to right center field for a 4-1 lead.

In the seventh, Farr walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Howell (1-4, RBI) for a 5-1 margin.

In the eighth, Kim reached on a fielder's choice with one out and crossed the plate when Sanford followed with an RBI triple to right center field for a 6-1 advantage toward the final margin of victory.

Wilson (4-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 5.2 innings for his team-leading fourth win of the season, scattering seven hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and four walks. Williams (4) tossed the final 3.1 innings, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and two walks for his ODAC-leading and team-best fourth save this season.

H-SC returns home on a short turnaround to welcome Wittenberg (OH) University (tomorrow) in a non-conference and neutral-site game on Sunday afternoon, March 15, at 12 p.m. at nearby Longwood University's Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
