HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior
Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) scored twice and added two assists, and freshman
Brown Parker (Raleigh, NC) scored twice with an assist, but Hampden-Sydney College fell to the University of Mary Washington 9-7, Wednesday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
Mary Washington jumped out to the lead to start the game, scoring the first two goals over the first 7:24 of the game. The Tigers clawed one back with just under six minutes remaining, when Parker found senior
Davis Mack (Henrico) wide open in front of the goalie for the easy catch and finish. The Eagles responded, scoring two more over the final 5:59 to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw the Eagles continue what they did in the first, scoring three unanswered to take a 7-1 lead into halftime.
H-SC broke the five-goal run to start the scoring in the third, as Parker raced by two defenders to his left before beating the goalie through the five-hole. Mary Washington responded to push the lead back to six, but just over a minute later, the Tigers caught the Eagles out on the break and junior
Trey Black (Pinehurst, NC) found Wood open to his left, who wound up and fired a shot into the back of the net. H-SC kept it rolling with exactly two minutes remaining, as Wood found sophomore
Broder Conley (Duluth, GA), who ducked under three defenders to his left and then finished inside the far post. The Tigers then cut the lead down to three less than a minute later, when senior
Cameron Young (Chantilly) ignited the fast break, finding Wood open to his left for the finish to make it 8-5 in favor of Mary Washington going into the final 15 minutes.
The Tigers kept it rolling in the fourth quarter, as just over two minutes in, junior
Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) found sophomore
Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) cutting to the net and fit the pass in between Eagles for the easy finish. H-SC then cut the lead to one a minute and 44 seconds later, when Wood found Parker wide open to his right, and he rifled a shot just over the goalie's stick. With 6:22 remaining, the Eagles stopped the five-goal run by the Tigers and pushed the lead back to two, where it stayed, as the Tigers could not find the back of the net the rest of the way and fell 9-7.
Wood co-led the Tigers with two goals while adding two assists, with Parker scoring twice and adding an assist. Mack, Conley, and Palmer each scored once, with Young, Black, and Wagner each getting an assist.
Senior
Tyler Steele (Pinehurst, NC) led the way defensively with three caused turnovers and grabbed two ground balls. Freshman
Will Foley (Virginia Beach) caused two turnovers and grabbed one ground ball. Young, Black, and Palmer each had one caused turnover.
Senior goalie
Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) stopped 17 of the 26 shots he faced on the evening.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 14, when they play host to Shenandoah University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
