Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At William Peace (NC) 15-12

BOX SCORE

CARY, N.C. --
Junior second baseman Matthew Kim (McLean) had career-highs of two hits and five RBIs, and sophomore catcher Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) had career-highs of three hits and four RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 15-12 non-conference baseball road win at William Peace University on Wednesday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Sophomore right-hander Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) started on the mound to earn the pitching victory for the visiting Tigers against the host Pacers. The Garnet & Grey won their fourth-straight game and improved to 5-1 on the season, while WPU dropped to 1-6.

H-SC scored 15 runs on 11 hits with three errors … scoring five runs in the first inning, four runs each in the second and third innings, and two runs in the seventh. WPU scored 12 runs on 11 hits with two errors … scoring one run in the first inning, five runs each in the third and fifth innings, and one run in the ninth.

In the first, sophomore left fielder Sam Vick (Capron) (RBI) led off the game with a walk, advanced two bases courtesy of an error by the pitcher and scored on an RBI triple to right-center field by senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (2-6, RBI). J. Wilson crossed the plate when junior first baseman Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) (RBI) followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to center field. Sophomore shortstop Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) (2-5, RBI) later reached on a two-out infield single, stole second base and scored on an RBI single to center field by senior right-hander/designated hitter Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) (2-6, RBI). Williams stole both second and third bases, along with a walk to Kim (2-3, 5 RBIs), and crossed the plate on a run-scoring single to center field by Truesdale (3-5, 4 RBIs). The bases were loaded with two outs after another walk, this time to sophomore right fielder Jack Wells (Sutherland), and when Vick drew his second walk of the at-bat, it forced Kim across the plate for the early 5-0 advantage.

In the second, Shelhorse and freshman third baseman Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) each walked to begin the at-bat, and the bases were loaded with one out after a single to right field by Williams. Kim followed with a two-run single that plated both Shelhorse and Lester, and a two-run single to right field by Truesdale allowed both Williams and Kim to cross the plate for a 9-1 margin.

In the third, J. Wilson singled up the middle to begin the inning and stole second and third bases around a walk to Shelhorse, who would steal second base, as well. A walk to Lester loaded the bases, and another walk, this time to Lewis forced J. Wilson across the plate. Kim drew a one-out walk to score Shelhorse and Truesdale followed with an RBI single to left field that scored Lester, and Lewis later crossed the plate on a wild pitch for a 13-1 advantage.

In the seventh, Shelhorse drew the lead-off walk and advanced to second on a one-out single to right field by Lewis. The two runners were successful on a double-steal and following the second out, Kim provided a two-run single to center field that scored both runners for a 15-11 margin toward the three-run margin of victory.
