Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) added a home run in the second game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped both games of a non-conference baseball doubleheader on the road at Marymount University on Saturday at Capital One Park in Tysons. Sophomore right-hander
Colin Mabe (Alton) took the pitching setback in relief in the 9-8 opener scheduled for seven innings, while sophomore right-hander
Brady Wilson (Virginia Beach) took the mound loss in relief in the 8-7, 10-inning nightcap. The visiting Tigers dropped to 5-3 overall, while the host Saints improved to 4-2.
In game one, H-SC scored eight runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring the four runs each in the second and seventh innings. MU scored nine runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the third inning, one run in the fifth and six runs the sixth.
In the second, junior second baseman
Matthew Kim (McLean) (1-3) singled through the right side with one out and advanced to second when sophomore left fielder
Jack Wells (Sutherland) walked, and the bases were loaded when Leonard (4-4) singled through the left side. Senior center fielder and team captain
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-4, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run double to right center field to score both Kim and Wells, and Leonard crossed the plate courtesy of a wild pitch that moved Wilson to third. Wilson scored on a ground ball RBI off the bat of Howell (1-4, 2 RBIs) for the early 4-0 advantage.
In the seventh, Howell led off with a solo home run, his first of the season and second homer of his career. Senior right fielder and team captain
Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-3) followed with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on ball four to freshman shortstop
Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (1-3) … while a walk to Truesdale (2-3) loaded the bases. Sophomore third baseman
Kennen Lewis (Dry Fork) (RBI) provided a sacrifice fly RBI to left field that plated Farr, before sophomore pinch-hitter
Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-1, RBI) added a run-scoring single to score Lester, and senior
Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) crossed the plate as a pinch-runner when junior pinch-hitter
Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) (RBI) reached on a fielder's choice to provide for the final one-run margin.
Senior right-hander and team captain
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Mabe (1-1) tossed the final 1.2 innings for the loss, allowing four hits and six runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, H-SC scored seven runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring five runs in the fourth inning and one run each in the fifth and ninth innings. MU scored eight runs on 12 hits with one error … scoring two runs each in the first and second innings, three runs in the fourth and one run the 10th.
In the fourth, Farr (1-3) led off with a double to center field, advanced to third on a single to left field by Truesdale (3-5, RBI) and scored on a wild pitch that moved Truesdale to second. Shelhorse followed with a walk and both runners advanced a base on another wild pitch. Wirt (1-4, 2 RBIs) provided a clutch, two-out double down the left field line that scored both Truesdale and Shelhorse, and Wirt crossed the plate when Leonard (1-4, RBI) followed with an RBI double to center field, and Leonard scored on a pinch-hit single to center field by Wells (2-3, RBI), who was pinch-hitting for a 5-4 lead.
In the fifth, Farr was hit by a pitch and later crossed the plate courtesy of a wild pitch with two outs for a 7-6 deficit.
In the ninth, Truesdale hit a solo home run, the first of his career, with one out to tie it at 7-7.
Sophomore left-hander
Noah Lewis (Crewe) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and three walks. Wilson (2-1) tossed the final 6.0-plus innings for the loss, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and three walks.
H-SC returns home on a short turnaround to welcome Johnson & Wales (RI) University (tomorrow) in another non-conference game on Sunday afternoon, March 1, at 3 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
