Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At Guilford (NC) 88-83

Sophomore guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) scored 17 points, and freshman guard Tyree White (Indian Trail, NC) added a career-high 14 points off the bench, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 88-83 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball road win at Guilford (NC) College on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina. The visiting Tigers trailed 38-36 at halftime, but used a 19-4 run to take a 66-55 lead with 8:35 remaining, before outscoring the host Quakers 16-11 over the final 4:39 after it was tied at 72-72. Senior guard/forward Kolby Wright (Cookeville, TN) added a career-high 12 points off the bench, while junior center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA) and sophomore guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) each had 10 points—Cannon adding a game-high 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double, as well. H-SC improved to 14-9 overall, 8-6 in the ODAC, earning its first win at GC in nine years (64-58, 1/21/17). The Quakers dropped to 12-11 overall, 6-8 in the ODAC, and were led by Braylen Salters with a game-high 35 points, while Ke Edwards added 17 points and Dawson Edwards had 14 points.

"Proud of our guys today," said seventh-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough, who won his first game against his alma mater in the building that he played in as a standout guard for GC (2004-08). "We played with heart, with effort and stayed together for 40 minutes. Big road win."

In a contest that began 12 minutes past its scheduled start time of 2 p.m. due to several pre-game festivities, including Senior Day at GC, H-SC took an early 4-1 lead after an offensive rebound basket by Cannon and drive to the basket by Moye. The Quakers scored the next seven points to lead 7-4, but Wright answered with a three-point field goal at 13:51 to tie it at 7-7. Two free throws by Wright and a three-pointer from White had the Tigers ahead 12-9 with 12:06 on the first-half clock, and a three-pointer by Moye gave the visitors their largest lead of the opening half, 21-17 at 9:38. H-SC still led 28-27 after two free throws from senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) at 6:06, and it was tied against at 30-30 following an offensive rebound and two-handed slam dunk by Cannon with 4:03 left. GC outscored the Garnet & Grey 8-6 over the final 3:54 to lead 38-36 at halftime as Salters scored 20 first-half points.

H-SC closed to within 41-40 early in the second half as sophomore guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) scored four quick points, and the Tigers were within 48-47 at 14:27 after another three-pointer by Moye. A three-pointer from Ke Edwards gave GC its largest lead of the second half at 51-47 with 14:16 remaining, but the Garnet & Grey seemingly took control of the contest with a 21-6 run to lead 68-57 at 7:59 following an offensive rebound tip-in by Wright. Stickney, White and Bizzelle each connected on three-pointers during the outburst, while Moye and Radcliffe each added four points and Cannon had another offensive rebound basket, as well. The Quakers made a final push with a quick 15-4 run to tie it at 72-72 with 5:13 on the clock, but H-SC responded with a 13-6 run to lead 85-78 with under a minute remaining as junior guard William Britt (Richmond) made two free throws—the Tigers making 8-12 over the final 1:33—and withstanding a last-second missed three-pointer that would have tied the contest toward the final margin of victory.

Moye led H-SC with his 17 points, adding three rebounds and three assists. White added his career-high 14 points (2-2 3FGs) off the bench for the Tigers, along with career-highs of five rebounds, four assists and one block, the latter two game-highs, as well. Wright contributed his career-high 12 points (2-3 3FGs), adding three rebounds, while Cannon and Bizzelle each had their respective 10 points … with Cannon adding his career-high and game-high 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double, along with two steals, one assist and one block … with Bizzelle adding a game-high three steals. Radcliffe and Stickney each scored nine points, and Britt had seven points … with Radcliffe equaling is career-high with seven rebounds, as well. H-SC shot 49% (32-66) from the field, including 36% (9-25) on three-pointers, and 63% (15-24) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 38-28 advantage in points scored in the paint, and a 35-17 advantage in bench points.

Salters led GC with his game-high 35 points, including 4-8 three-pointers. Ke Edwards finished with 17 points for the Quakers, while Dawson Edwards had 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high four assists. GC shot 43% (29-68) from the field, including 44% (12-27) on three-pointers, and 81% (13-16) at the line. H-SC limited the Quakers to 12 points below their season scoring average of 95.0 points entering the contest, and Coach Kimbrough is now 7-6 overall against his alma mater.
