(RV)Hampden-Sydney Defeats Visiting Lynchburg 87-81

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) posted his first double-double of the season with season-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds, equaling his career-high with a season-high eight assists, and sophomore guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) also scored 19 points, to lead (RV)Hampden-Sydney College to an 87-81 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball home win past the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon on the new Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The host Tigers and visiting Hornets were tied at 36-36 at halftime, before the Garnet & Grey used a 26-12 run midway through the second half toward the victory. Sophomore guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) added his third double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high and game-high 12 assists, along with eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX) had 10 points and eight rebounds. H-SC improved to 10-5 overall, 4-2 in the ODAC, while Lynchburg dropped to 9-7 overall, 4-3 in the ODAC. The Hornets were led by Jamarcus Brown with a game-high 21 points, while Michael Gray and Jesse Mitchell each added 18 points.

"Ugly one today but we protected home court and found a way," said seventh-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "I thought our togetherness and ability to stay positive through a lot of turnovers and fouls allowed us to make enough plays to get it done. I think we will learn a lot from this one going into next week."

H-SC, receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, scored the opening points of the contest on a two-handled slam dunk by junior center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA), assisted by Stickney at 19:37. Lynchburg, however, used a quick 11-2 run to lead 11-4 with 16:53 on the first-half clock, getting a pair of three-point field goals from Jayson Easton and two dunks by Brown. The Tigers battled back and tied it at 13-13 on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) at 13:26, but the visitors surged again and equaled their largest lead at 21-14 with 10:43 on the clock. The Garnet & Grey once-again rallied and went ahead 24-23 at 7:32 after a three-pointer by senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) and a basket inside by Cannon, assisted by Stickney and Fernald, respectively. It remained close for the remainder of the half with seven lead-changes and five ties over the final 6:12, and it was tied at 36-36 at halftime after two free throws by Moye and a jumper from Brown in the final minute.

H-SC began the second half as it did the first half with Cannon scoring down low off an assist from Stickney, and Lynchburg followed suit with Easton connecting on another three-pointer. It continued closely between the two teams with the Hornets taking a 45-42 advantage after two free throws by Brown with at 15:16. The Tigers, however, used a 26-12 run to take their largest lead at 68-57 with 7:24 remaining … as Moye (8) started the outburst with back-to-back three-pointers, and both Stickney (3) and Fernald (6) added old-fashioned three-point plays, with Bizzelle (3) adding a three-pointer, as well, while Lynch (6) scored on drives to the basket. The Garnet & Grey still led 72-61 after an offensive rebound basket by sophomore guard Asa Williams (Atlanta, GA) at 5:10, but the Hornets would not go away and closed to within 74-72 at 2:49, aided by a rare four-point play from Piercen Young. Stickney answered with a three-pointer and a layup to push the margin to 79-72 with 1:20 left, but the visitors were within 81-78 after a pair of free throws with 41-seconds on the clock. Radcliff then made a crucial three-pointer with 18-seconds remaining, as the Tigers scored six of the game's final nine points for the final margin.

Fernald and Moye led H-SC with their respective 19 points each, a season-high for Fernald who also added season-highs of 11 rebounds—also a game-high—and eight assists, the latter equaling his career-high, as well. Stickney finished with his 11 points, a career-high and game-high 12 assists, and eight rebounds for the Tigers, adding two steals. It was Fernald's first double-double of the season, and the third double-double for Stickney as the two were each close to the rare triple-double. Lynch contributed his 10 points and eight rebounds two assists, while Cannon had eight points, Radcliffe had seven points and Williams had a career-high six points. H-SC shot 53% (31-59) from the field, including 30% (7-23) on three-pointers, and 75% (18-24) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 42-22 advantage in points scored in the paint, and a 59-23 advantage in bench points.

Brown led Lynchburg with his game-high 21 points, adding five rebounds. Gray and Mitchell finished with their respective 18 points each for the Hornets, while Young had 10 points and five assists. Lynchburg shot 45% (26-58) from the field, including 31% (9-29) on three-pointers, and 80% (20-25) at the line.
