(RV)Hampden-Sydney Wins At Averett 1-0

DANVILLE, Va. -- Senior Victor Ovalle-Mares (Atlanta, GA) scored the game's only goal to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to 1-0 win over Averett University to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, Saturday night at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.

The first half saw neither side find the back of the net, but the Tigers were the ones applying the pressure on the Cougars. H-SC took 10 shots in the first half compared to one for the Cougars, and called the Averett goalie into action with three shots. H-SC also held a three-to-one advantage in corner kicks through 45 minutes.

It took until the 67th minute, but the Tigers finally found the back of the net, as Ovalle-Mares beat two defenders before burying it in the bottom left corner from just inside the box. The Tigers held strong the rest of the way, weathering two shots over the final 23 minutes to secure a 1-0 win and their fourth shutout of the year.

H-SC was on the attack all game, taking 21 shots compared to five for Averett, with eight of the shots for the Tigers finding the target.

Freshman goalie Stig Larson (Richmond) got his seventh win in net this season, making one save.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, October 1, when they travel to Lexington to take on Washington and Lee University at 7 p.m. at Alston Parker Watt Field.
