HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior
Mason Dudley (Virginia Beach) scored in the 77th minute to propel (RV)Hampden-Sydney College to a 2-1 win against Randolph College in a game designated non-conference on Saturday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
Despite a strong offensive showing in the first half for H-SC—receiving votes this week in the
United Soccer Coaches Top 25—which included 13 shots and three on target, it was the WildCats that found the back of the net from one of their four shots to take a lead in the 33rd minute and go into halftime leading 1-0.
The Tigers kept the pressure on in the second half, and then just over six minutes into the second half, freshman
Owen Edwards (Matthews, NC) collected a clearance by the WildCats on the edge of the box, took a touch and fired a shot that kept moving away from a diving goalie and into the back of the net for his first career goal. It took another 15 minutes before a deciding goal was found, as junior
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) had his shot saved on the left side of the box, but Dudley got to the rebound first and fired it home to give H-SC the lead with just over 13 minutes to play. The Tigers held strong the rest of the way, only seeing one more shot from the WildCats to hold on to a 2-1 win.
The Tigers held a large advantage in shots (21-7) and shots on target (8-1) in the game.
Freshman
Stig Larson (Richmond) got the win in net for his sixth of the season.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 27, when they hit the road to start Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play against Averett University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
