HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College got a goal in the first five minutes of each half to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan University 2-0, in non-conference action Thursday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers got the scoring started just four minutes and 27 seconds after the opening kick-off, as junior
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) crossed the ball in towards the back post and found sophomore
Zakky Johnston (Meherrin) for the header. H-SC put two more shots on target in the first half but were denied both times to take the game to half at 1-0.
It took a minute and 29 seconds into the second half for the Tigers to double their advantage, as senior
Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) cut off a pass right outside the box and beat the keeper into the bottom left corner. In the final 43:31, the Battling Bishops tried to claw back a goal, but H-SC was up to the task and held them scoreless to complete the shutout and secure a 2-0 win.
The shots in the game were even between both sides at 11, but the Tigers challenged the goalie more often, putting eight shots on target compared to one for the Battling Bishops.
Freshman goalie
Stig Larson (Richmond) earned his fifth win in net this season, making one save to secure his third shutout of the season.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 20, when they play host to Randolph College in a game designed as non-conference. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
