VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College scored a 79th minute penalty to reclaim a lead and take a 2-1 win against Virginia Wesleyan University in a game designated non-conference on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) gave the Tigers the lead with 1:32 remaining in the first half, as he took a free kick from outside the right side of the box, and curled it into the bottom right corner for the goal to lead 1-0 going into halftime.
The second half saw the Tigers' lead evaporate quickly, with the Marlins finding the back of the net in the 49th minute. 30 minutes later, on a throw-in, senior
Walker Stebbings (Forest) was brought down in the box to give H-SC a penalty, and then senior
Jaques Lavielle (Cary, NC) buried it in the top left corner. The Tiger held strong the final 11:34 to hold on to a 2-1 win.
The stats were even between the two sides, with the Tigers holding a one-shot advantage and having one more corner kick than the Marlins.
Freshman goalie
Stig Larson (Richmond) got the win in net, making a save.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, August 14, when they travel up to Newport News to take on Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m. at Captains Field.
