RICHMOND, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College used two first half goals and added an insurance goal in the second half to knock off No.24 University of Mary Washington 3-0, Wednesday evening at City Stadium in Richmond.
It took less than three minutes for the scoring to get started as senior
Walker Stebbings (Forest) got a ball over the top from sophomore
Colin Hallman (Cornelius, NC) beating two defenders and then dribbling around a diving keeper before blasting it into the roof of the net. The lead was doubled as sophomore
Kevin Nova Euceda (Woodbridge) put a free kick into the box, where the ball bounced off the wet grass and into the knee of an Eagle defender before finding the back of the net to give H-SC a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers struck once more in the game in the 72nd minute, as junior
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) played a ball onto the run of senior
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian), who had his first shot saved but tapped in the rebound to give the Tigers a three-goal lead. That goal closed the outing as the Tigers held the Eagles off the scoreboard to secure a 3-0 win.
The game was even from a stats perspective, with the Tigers holding a one-shot lead, and three shot on-target lead, with the biggest discrepancy coming from a five to one corner advantage for H-SC.
Freshman goalie
Stig Larson (Richmond) earned the win in net, securing his second straight shutout with a four save performance.Â
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 13, when they play their first true road game at Virginia Wesleyan University in a game designated as non-conference. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tassos Paphites Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach.
