HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College used four goals in the first 32 minutes to help power it to a 5-1 win over Southern Virginia University in non-conference action at Hellmuth-Gibson Field on Friday night.
The Tigers opened the evening when sophomore
Colin Mason (Lynchburg) whipped in a cross from the right edge of the box, finding senior
Walker Stebbings (Forest) in the box, whose touch bounced off a defender and back to him for the right-footed finish. Just over six minutes later, H-SC doubled its lead, as junior
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) crossed the ball into the box from the left side, right into the path of the run from senior
Mason Dudley (Virginia Beach) for the tap-in goal. Less than three minutes later, the Tigers struck again, as senior
Pierce Boerner (Midlothian) had his shot saved, but senior
Michael Farmer (Virginia Beach) was first to the rebound and got it just over the goal line. H-SC had one more goal left in it in the first half, as in the 32nd minute, Petz played a long ball for Boerner to run onto, who got around a charging goalie for the Knights and put the ball into the open net to give the Tigers a 4-0 halftime advantage.
The second half saw the goals slow, as it took just under 50 minutes since the last goal in the first half for the next goal to find the back of the net, with the Knights striking for the first time. Just over four minutes later, H-SC restored its four-goal advantage, with Boerner crossing the ball across the goal from the left side, where freshman
Ubaid Wasi (Meherrin) flicked it into the far corner for his first career goal. After two goals in four minutes, the final six minutes did not see a goal as the Tigers secured a 5-1 win.
Freshman
Stig Larson (Richmond) earned his first career win in net in his first start.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, August 31, when they play host to Marymount University in non-conference action at 2 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
