Hampden-Sydney Falls On The Road At (3)Lynchburg 15-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore third baseman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) had one hit and two RBIs, and junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) collected two hits, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 15-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision on the road at nationally-ranked No. 3 the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday afternoon in Lynchburg. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started on the mound and took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (13-16, 7-9) against the host Hornets (25-4, 12-2) in the seven-inning contest due to the ODAC run rule.

H-SC scored three runs on seven hits with one error … scoring the three runs in the sixth inning. Lynchburg scored 15 runs on 12 hits with one error … scoring one run each in the first and second innings, five runs in the fifth and eight runs in the sixth.

In the sixth, Wilson (2-3) drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a single to center field by junior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-3) and the bases were loaded after an infield single by senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-3). Senior left fielder Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-3) then reached base via a fielder's choice, but Wilson was out at the plate for the second out of the at-bat. Sanford scored when junior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) (RBI) reached on another fielder's choice with a fielding error on the play, as well, and both Harris and Chambers crossed the plate when Howell (1-2, 2 RBIs) followed with a two-run single up the middle for a 7-3 contest. The Hornets, however, responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to provide for the final margin and allowed them to avenge one of their four losses of the season. The Tigers won the first meeting of the season by a score of 3-1 on March 19 on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.

Austin (2-4) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.0-plus innings, allowing six hits and five runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore right-hander Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) recorded one out, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Junior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) recorded one out, yielding no hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Senior right-hander Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) faced four batters, allowing three hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) tossed the final two-thirds of an inning, yielding no hits and no runs with one strikeout and no walks.
