Farmville, VA The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club defeated Virginia Commonwealth and host Longwood on Saturday to win the tournament championship at the annual Todd Miller Memorial 7's. In the first match vs VCU, the Tigers got ahead early with a try by Tristan Leidig and conversion by Graeme Ebert. Controlling the pace throughout, H-SC struck again with a try by Alex Barth and another conversion by Ebert to set the final score at 14-10. In the second match against Longwood, Jackson Cofer caught the ball off kickoff, dodged 3 defenders and scored an individual try within 10 seconds, with a Graeme Ebert conversion setting an early 7-0 lead for the Tigers. After a quick Longwood counter, Jonathan Person mimicked the earlier score with a 60 meter run right off the next kick off, again with a conversion by Ebert. Person then elevated from the previous return with a 70 meter break away the next time he touched the ball, with another conversion by Ebert. Alex Barth then scored to close out the half with the Tigers up 28-5, once again with a kick by Ebert. Barth then continued with a 65 meter retrun try at the start of the second half and then converted the kick. Following a Longwood score, Thomas Nichols scored next for the ruggers with a try from scrimmage. Immediately after, Alex Rhangos and Jackson Cofer connected, creating a try in the corner for Cofer, bringing the final score to 45-12. This completes the season for the Garnet and Grey.
