Hampden-Sydney Takes Down Averett 19-6

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Will Thompson (Charlotte, NC) scored three goals to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 19-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Averett University Friday evening.

The Tigers got the scoring started in the game as senior Campion White (Apex, NC) put home the pass from junior Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) to take the lead at the 12:48 mark. Two minutes and 18 seconds later, the lead was doubled as sophomore Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) finished the pass from freshman Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA). Wood then struck again at the 7:11 mark, finishing his effort to give the Tigers a three-goal lead. That was the end of a low-scoring first quarter that saw H-SC take a 3-0 lead into the second.

The Cougars got the second quarter started with a goal 47 seconds in, but 55 seconds later, the Tigers responded with a Hanes goal off a White feed. A minute and 33 seconds later, H-SC struck again, this time on the man advantage with White putting home the Wood feed. Just over a minute later, it was Palmer finding the back of the net off the pass from freshman Broder Conley (Duluth, GA). It just took 24 seconds for the Tigers to strike again as freshman Barron Dobson (Shreveport, LA) put home the feed from senior Griff Ray (Salem) on the man advantage. H-SC pushed the lead up to seven at the 8:56 mark as freshman Bryce Harnsberger (Advance, NC) found the back of the net. Dobson got his second of the game just over a minute later off an assist from freshman Cooper Goss (Suffolk). Thompson struck for the first time in the game 29 seconds later off an assist from freshman Kaidan Garst (Salem). On the ensuing face-off, freshman Peter Bolanis (Washington, D.C.) won and took it all the way before beating the goalie. Averett got one back before the end of the quarter, but H-SC took an 11-2 lead into halftime.

Averett opened the third quarter by making it two unanswered with a goal at the 10:56 mark before H-SC responded at the 7:13 mark with the second Thompson goal off an assist from freshman Nick Esposito (Yardley, PA). The Tigers made it two straight just under three minutes later with freshman Brenden Kittner (Freeland, MD) scoring off a Dobson assist. The Cougars broke the run with a goal before 54 seconds later freshman Charlie Olivier (Atlanta, GA) scored off a Garst assist to close the scoring in the quarter and give H-SC a 14-4 lead going into the fourth.

A minute into the fourth quarter, the Cougars got the scoring started before 35 seconds later sophomore Trey Black (Pinehurst, NC) struck off a Ray feed. 45 seconds later, Thompson got his hat trick off a dish from freshman Stanton Cutter (Norfolk). Two minutes and 10 seconds after Thompson scored, Goss got a goal on the board off a Harnsberger feed. After a goal by the Cougars, Esposito and sophomore Weston Totty (Salem) combined for the next two over 40 seconds, with Esposito scoring and Totty dishing to make it 19-6 in favor of H-SC.

Thompson led all scorers with three goals, while White, Wood, Dobson, and Esposito scored twice and added an assist. Hanes, Palmer, Goss, and Harnsberger scored a goal and had an assist, while Olivier, Kittner, Black, and Bolanis scored goals. Ray, Garst, and Totty tallied two assists, with Cutter having a goal.
