NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior second baseman
Christian Chambers (Midlothian) and sophomore designated hitter
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) each collected two hits with one RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 9-6 non-conference baseball decision on the road at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon in Newport News. Sophomore left-hander
Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) took the mound setback in relief for the visiting Tigers (12-14) against the host Captains (16-11).
H-SC scored six runs on 10 hits with four errors … scoring one run in the fourth inning and five runs in the seventh. CNU scored nine runs on 10 hits with one error … scoring three runs each in the first, sixth and eighth innings.
In the fourth, senior first baseman and team captain
Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-4) singled up the middle to begin the frame, advanced to second on a single through the left side by Howell (2-5, RBI) and both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder
Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (RBI). Following the second out, Harris crossed the plate courtesy of a wild pitch for a 3-1 deficit.
In the seventh, freshman third baseman
Jack Wells (Southerland) (1-5) hit a ground-rule double to left field as the leadoff batter ahead of a walk to senior shortstop
Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-2). Junior center fielder and team captain
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-4) drew a walk with one out to load the bases, and everyone advanced a base with Wells scoring on another wild pitch. Harris followed with another walk to load the bases once-again, and following a pitching change, Howell singled through the right side to plate Masterson, and Wilson scored when Moore reached on a fielder's choice with Harris crossing the plate, as well, on a throwing error on the play.
