Hampden-Sydney Takes 16-11 Road Win At Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Sophomore Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) scored three goals and added, and junior Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) scored three goals to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 16-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Virginia Wesleyan University Wednesday evening.

The Tigers got the game's scoring started just 55 seconds in as junior Davis Mack (Henrico) found the back of the net. The lead was doubled 42 seconds later as Hanes got on the board with his first of the evening. The Marlins responded, getting two straight goals to even the scores before freshman Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) struck to give H-SC the lead. Virginia Wesleyan responded once more to even the game before Hanes struck for the second time to give the lead back to the Tigers. Less than a minute later, the lead was doubled once more as Wood cashed in the feed from senior Campion White (Apex, NC). The Tigers kept it rolling on offense, as 58 seconds later, Mack got his second of the evening to push the lead to three. H-SC pushed the lead to four 17 seconds after Mack's goal, Wood got his second of the day off a pass from Cole Palmer. The Marlins got one more goal with 29 seconds to cut the H-SC lead to 7-4.

The Tigers got the scoring started in a quarter they dominated, the second quarter, as freshman Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) finished off the pass from White just over four minutes in. White went from assisting to scoring at the 10:07 mark to push the lead to five. Conley got his second of the afternoon just 18 seconds after White when he put home the dish from Wood. It took three minutes and 15 seconds before the game saw another goal, but freshman Nick Winchell (Wilmington, DE) kept the offense rolling after putting home a pass from sophomore Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) to make the lead seven. H-SC closed the quarter with two goals in 50 seconds, the first coming off the goal by Hanes for his hat trick and the second off a goal from Wood for his hat trick to make it 13-4 going into the break.

After scoring was rampant through the first half, the third quarter saw both offenses grind to a halt, but the Marlins did get on the board first, scoring just 12 seconds into the quarter. H-SC responded less than a minute later as Cole Palmer finished off the feed from sophomore Kevin Myers (Charlottesville). Virginia Wesleyan finished off the scoring in the quarter just under 10 minutes after the goal by Cole Palmer, to make it 14-6 H-SC going into the final 15 minutes.

The Tigers answered the goal from Virginia Wesleyan in the third quarter to open the scoring in the fourth quarter as White found the back of the net 2 minutes and 13 seconds in. After a goal from the Marlins, freshman Cooper Goss (Suffolk) found the back of the net to give the Tigers an eight-goal advantage with 5:15 remaining. Virginia Wesleyan answered back, scoring three goals in the final two minutes, but H-SC was able to hold on with a 16-11 win.

Wood and Hanes led the Tigers with three goals, with Wood also chipping in an assist. White scored twice with two assists, Cole Palmer scored two with an assist, and Mack and Conley scored two goals. Goss and Winchell scored once while Myers and Wagner had one assist apiece. Junior Evan Yntema (Summerfield, NC) went 10-14 on face-offs to lead the Tigers.

Junior Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) got the win in net for the Tigers, making eight saves while allowing eight goals over the first 56:16. Senior Owen Hegadorn (Falls Church) played the final 3:44 and made three saves on six shots on target.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 19, when they play host to rival Randolph-Macon College in ODAC action at 1 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium in a game that will also be senior day.
