Hampden-Sydney Takes Road Win Over Mary Washington 14-12

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Freshman Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) scored four goals and added an assist while sophomore Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) scored two goals with three assists as Hampden-Sydney College defeated the University of Mary Washington 14-12 on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg.

The Tigers got the scoring started in the game with 8:41 left in the first quarter as sophomore Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) found freshman Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) for the goal. After two goals for the Eagles gave them the lead, H-SC tied the game as freshman Nick Winchell (Wilmington, DE) found Cole Palmer for his first of the afternoon. Winchell then got in the goal column to take the lead with 3:57 left in the quarter, finishing off the feed from Conley. Junior Connor Erlenbach (Midlothian) doubled the advantage off the ensuing face-off, putting the ball past the goalie 13 seconds after Winchell, to take the game to 4-2 in favor of H-SC.

The Tigers kept it rolling going into the second quarter, as junior Davis Mack (Henrico) put home the feed from Wagner. Senior Campion White (Apex, NC) pushed the Tigers' run to five goals as he cashed in the pass from Wood. Just over two minutes later, Mack scored his second of the game when he converted the pass from Cole Palmer into the seventh goal of the afternoon. The Eagles got one before the final whistle closed the second quarter, but H-SC held a commanding 7-3 lead going into halftime.

It took just over three minutes into the third quarter for H-SC to get the scoring started, as Cole Palmer put home his second goal of the game off the feed from senior Griff Ray (Salem). With the lead at five, the Eagles responded, putting up three unanswered goals in just over 33 seconds to cut the lead to two. H-SC responded with two of its own, starting with a goal from Cole Palmer with 8:37 remaining and then followed by White at 6:05 off the feed from Wood. The Eagles then ripped off another three goals over two minutes to cut the lead to 10-9. The Tigers were able to push the lead back to two with five seconds remaining, as Conley finished off the feed from junior Cameron Young (Chantilly). The Eagles then beat the buzzer to cut the lead back to one before the final 15 minutes, making it 11-10 in favor of the Tigers with 15 minutes to play.

Cole Palmer restored the two goal lead for the Tigers at the 11 minute mark of the fourth quarter, finishing the pass from Wood. The Eagles clawed one back before Wood put home two unanswered, scoring the first at the 2:44 mark off a pass from Mack, and putting home the second with 39 seconds remaining to push the lead to three. The Eagles scored the final goal with four seconds remaining, but the Tigers were able to hold on and take a 14-12 win.
