Hampden-Sydney Wins 13-12 Over Baldwin Wallace (OH)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Kavin Wood (Cary, NC) and freshman Broder Conley (Duluth, GA) each scored three goals and added four assists to help propel Hampden-Sydney College to a 13-12 win over Baldwin Wallace (OH) University, Wednesday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets got the scoring started in the game, scoring four unanswered over the first 6:43. One minute and 21 seconds later, the Tigers broke the scoring run, as senior Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) finished off the feed from freshman Lee Acra (Norfolk). Freshman Cole Palmer (Atlanta, GA) cut the lead in half with a goal with 5:25 remaining in the quarter, finishing the pass from Conley for the goal. Conley cut the lead to one less than a minute later, cashing in the feed from Wood on the man-advantage to make it 4-3 in favor of Baldwin Wallace after 15 minutes.

Conley and Wood connected again on the man-advantage to get the scoring started in the second quarter and tie up the game. H-SC grabbed the lead three and a half minutes later, as junior Davis Mack (Henrico) put the pass from the Conley past the keeper. Baldwin Wallace clawed one back just over four minutes later, before Wood got his first of the afternoon less than a minute later off the assist from Conley. The Yellow Jackets got one more before half to knot the game up at six going into the break.

The Tigers waited four minutes and 25 seconds into the third quarter to take the lead back as Mack finished off a pass from Wood. The Yellow Jackets got one back less than a minute to even the score back up before Wood took matters into his own hands with a goal just over a minute after Baldwin Wallace to give the Tigers back the lead. H-SC then added another with 7:05 remaining, as Wood found Conley for the third goal of the afternoon coming via that connection. Baldwin Wallace closed out the scoring in the third quarter, cutting the lead to one going into the fourth quarter.

Cole Palmer pushed the lead back to two just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter, finishing off the feed from Acra. Baldwin Wallace scored just under two minutes later, before Wood wasted no time restoring the two goal lead, scoring off a Conley assist 25 seconds later. The Yellow Jackets responded with another goal less than a minute later, before junior Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) scored his first goal of the season off the pass from Cole Palmer. The Yellow Jackets responded with two straight goals to knot the score up at 12 with 4:28 remaining. Senior Campion White (Apex, NC) grabbed the lead back for H-SC with 2:48, rifling in a shot from distance off the pass from Hanes. The Tigers held on the final 2:48, shutting down Baldwin Wallace on the final offensive possession with 17 seconds remaining to claim a 13-12 win.

Wood and Conley scored three goals and added four assists, while Mack had two goals. Cole Palmer had two goals with one assist and Hanes had a goal and an assist. Kilfeather and White each scored a goal for the Tigers, while Acra tallied two assists.

Acra and sophomore Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC) led the Tigers with two caused turnovers. Kilfeather caused a turnover and grabbed five ground balls to go along with his goal. Senior Liam Swartz (Springboro, OH), junior Cameron Young (Chantilly), and freshman Riley Mullins (Glen Allen) each caused a turnover.

Junior Will Palmer (Atlanta, GA) made 11 saves and grabbed two ground balls while allowing 12 goals to pick up the win.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 15, when they travel to take on Ohio Wesleyan University. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Shelby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio.
