BOX SCORE
H
AMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
Junior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) had two hits and one RBI, and senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) also had two hits, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 12-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision at home to Ferrum College on Tuesday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior right-hander Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) started and took the pitching setback for the host Tigers (3-7, 0-1) in the seven-inning, run-rule contest against the visiting Panthers (6-4, 1-0). It was the first ODAC game of the season.

H-SC scored one run on five hits with one error … scoring the lone run in the sixth inning. FC scored 12 runs on 15 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning and 11 runs in the decisive sixth.

In the sixth, sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) walked to begin the at-bat, advanced to second on an infield single to third base by junior center field and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-3), moved to third on a ground ball double-play, and scored on an RBI single to left field by Arnold (2-3, RBI). The two-out hit and run scored provided for the final margin.

Masterson (2-3) collected the other two hits for the Garnet & Grey.

Gregory (1-2) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 5.0 solid innings, scattering five hits and one run, earned, with six strikeouts and no walks. Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) faced two batters, yielding one hit and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Junior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) faced six batters, allowing four hits and six runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore right-hander Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) pitched 1.0 inning, yielding four hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Senior right-hander Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
