HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) had two hits, an RBI and a stolen base in the first game, while junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) had two home runs and three RBIs in the second game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at nationally-ranked No. 27 Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon in Winchester. Junior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) took the pitching setback in late relief in the 11-inning, 3-2 opener, while junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started and took the mound loss in the 13-7 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (12-12, 6-6) against the host Hornets (18-7, 9-2).
 
In game one, H-SC scored two runs on six hits with three errors … scoring the two runs in the seventh inning. SU scored three runs on nine hits with one error … scoring two runs in the second inning and the decisive run in the 11th.
 
In the seventh, senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) drew a walk to begin the at-bat, advanced to second when senior pinch-hitter Christian Chambers (Midlothian) was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced a base when sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) walked, as well, to load the bases with no outs. Masterson crossed the plate on a ground ball double play with Chambers advancing to third, and Chambers scored the tying run when Sanford (2-4, RBI) followed with a clutch, two-out RBI single up the middle for a 2-2 contest.
 
It stayed that way until SU scored the game-winner on a walk-off, pinch-hit solo home run in the 11th. Sophomore third baseman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (2-4) also collected two hits in the opener.
 
Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and three walks. Senior right-hander Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) followed with 5.1 scoreless innings, scattering two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Fitz-Hugh (3-2) faced two batters and recorded one out, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.
 
In game two, H-SC scored seven runs on 11 hits with two errors … scoring two runs each in the first, second and third innings, and one run in the seventh. SU scored 13 runs on 16 hits with no errors … scoring three runs each in the first and third innings, one run in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
 
In the first, Wilson (2-5, 3 RBIs) opened the nightcap with a solo home run to left center field. Chambers (1-3) reached on a two-out single to right field, advanced to second on a single through the left side by senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) (3-4, RBI), and scored on an RBI single to center field by Howell (2-3, 2 RBIs) for the early 2-0 advantage.
 
In the second, Leonard (2-4) singled to center field with two outs and scored ahead of Wilson who followed with his second homer of the contest for a 4-3 lead. The two early home runs by Wilson were his team-best third and fourth of the season, and give him eight homers in his career.
 
In the third, Chambers walked with one out and advanced to second on an infield single by Harris. Chambers scored, and Harris advanced to third on a run-scoring single by Howell, with Harris crossing the plate when the catcher threw to first after a strikeout swinging that on a ball in the dirt … and the Tigers led 6-3.
 
In the seventh, junior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-3) reached on an infield single with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs and scored when Harris provided an RBI single up the middle for a 10-7 score toward the final margin.
 
Austin (2-3) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore right-hander Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) pitched two-thirds of an innings, yielding two hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore right-hander Hank Blanton (Midlothian) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) faced three batters, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Senior right-hander Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman left-hander Bobby Holihan (Yorktown) pitched the final scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout and no walks.
 
H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC member and archrival (RV)Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday night, April 1, at 7 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. It's the first official night game for the program since the new lights were installed prior to the season.
