Richmond, VA The Hampden-Sydney Rugby Football Club battled nationally-ranked competition on Saturday at the Richmond Spider 7's tournament. Teams from Maryland, Pennsylvannia, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington, DC. gathered in Richmond and squared off with an automatic trip to the 7's national tournament on the line for the champion. With three starters out for the day, the Ruggers opened with a 29-7 loss to #11 Susquehanna, with a try and kick by
Graeme Ebert. Up next was #13 and perennial national championship contender Christendom, with the Tigers falling 31-0. In their last match of the day, H-SC battled back for a 17-17 tie with Curry College with scores by
Graeme Ebert,
Jonathan Person, and
Knox Burton and a conversion by Ebert. Six of the nation's top twenty teams competed on Saturday, with #14 VMI taking the championship and national qualifier. Other ranked teams competing included #7 Slippery Rock, #19 USSMA, and #20 Vanderbilt. The Tigers next match will be the annual alumni game on Saturday, March 29th at home on Johnny Ellis Field at 3:00 pm.
